Lundeberg Merchant Marine School of Seamanship, Vocational and Tutorial Services Resource Coordinator

Issue: Coast Guard license testing is conducted entirely in English. Spanish-speaking seamen were unable to get a captain’s license because of their limited English skills. Anglo captains had difficulty communicating with Spanish-speaking crews.

Solution: We learned navigation then worked with a Spanish-speaking class enabling eight to obtain their captain’s license. Researched, wrote and illustrated independent study materials for the Deck and Engine Departments. Tutored vessel-licensing candidates.

“Unbelievable results!”
